HANAPEPE — Kauai Habitat for Humanity homeowners Joanna Jacinto and Dolores and Orlando Ruiz changed their routine Saturday at Salt Pond Beach Park.
“We were told this service project counts as part of our hours,” Jacinto said. “This is a pleasant change of pace from building our own homes.”
Nearly three dozen adult volunteers from the Rotary Club of Poipu and Kauai Habitat converged at Salt Pond Beach Park to repaint several of the pavilions and picnic tables under terms of the Weinberg Friends service project of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
“This is a win-win,” said Chris Young, president of the Rotary Club of Poipu. “Rotarians get to come out and provide hands-on maintenance to the beach park that everyone loves, and the Rotary Club gets to direct $10,000 (from the Weinberg Foundation) to Kauai Habitat to support the amazing work they do on Kauai. We just cannot thank the Weinberg Foundation enough.”
Catherine Shiningstar Ka‘auwai, Kauai Habitat’s family services manager, didn’t mind driving to Salt Pond for the project.
“I drive in from Wailua every day for my job,” Shiningstar said.
“We work together one-on-one, and when it is time to submit the mortgage loan application, the homeowners are ready to go. We thank the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and the Rotary Club of Poipu for their generous support.”
