KAPAA — Residents at the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital were enjoying themselves Monday during the mini carnival set up on the pathway outside the auditorium.
“It might look like they’re just having fun,” said Josie Pablo, recreation director. “But these activities help the residents develop upper body strength as well as eye/hand coordination. “
The carnival launched a week-long celebration of Mahelona Hospital’s 100th anniversary which culminates with the luau Saturday in the hospital’s courtyard which, on Monday, housed the popular fish pond.
“We are so lucky that we have our volunteers coming to help us with the carnival,” Pablo said. “Setting up a carnival takes a lot of work, and we are lucky we have so many volunteers.”
Wilma Chandler, a Mahelona Hospital volunteer, said having volunteers are good for the patients as well.
“When we have a bunch of different people, the residents get excited,” Chandler said. “They participate in more activities and do more because of the people’s presence.”
Activities continue through the week, including a cookout Wednesday, and a special luau for residents Friday with entertainment by Dennis Apilado and Friends leading up to the celebration luau Saturday.
