LIHUE — Something for everyone was the theme of the Lihue United Church 39th annual Labor Day Breakfast at the Parish Hall.
Melissa Nobriga found a collection of nut crackers in the white elephant sale which benefited the church parsonage’s remodeling.
“I collect nut crackers,” Nobriga said. “I had to get them now for Christmas this year.”
Janie Crane, taking a break from ticket distribution, discovered quaint candle holders and other ceramic pieces.
“We definitely have more tickets sold than last year,” said Adele Manera, the breakfast co-chair with Joye Irwin. “Proceeds from the ticket sales benefit the Tutu and Me Traveling Preschool program. Our big rush happened about 8 a.m. The crowd is tapering off to just a steady flow now.”
Mary Llego was walking five to-go plates through the serving line manned by Lihue United Church volunteers.
“These are for my co-workers at Deja Vu,” she said. “They wanted to come, but they’re working today so I’m picking up their meals.”
Breakfast plates consisting of choice of white rice, or hand-made fried rice, scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, and assorted pastries made up the offering which could be enjoyed at the Parish Hall, or taken to go.
“We had our big rush about 8 o’clock,” said David Collion, sausage chef. “It’s pretty steady now so I can take a break with my relatives who are here from Australia.”
Eunice Bergonio coordinated the entertainment which included Rose Kurita and her group, Jenny Nezbeda who got help with music from Lois Ricciardi, and Nina Saraos doing a variety of piano pieces ranging from classical to contemporary.
Ellsworth Fontes and the visiting Rock n Roll Motorcycle Club, including three dozen riders and 25 motorcycles, wanted to patronize the breakfast after learning about it during the Labor Day Blowout, said Harold Rosa of the Sons of Kauai motorcycle group.
“He and his group really wanted to come,” Rosa said. “But they got an early start on a ride to Koke‘e. We’ll enjoy for them and catch up with the group afterwards.”
Larry Feinstein was part of the Sons of Kauai who was enjoying his weekend before leaving for Italy on a writing road trip.
“This is unbelievably good,” Feinstein said. “I had to think about it, but I’ve been coming to this Labor Day breakfast with the club since I moved here about 14 years ago. I’m leaving Tuesday for what I’m calling, Larry’s Adventura d’Italia (posting to his mindandmotorcycle.com blog). I’ll be back in time for the Rice Street Block Party on Sept. 23.”
