LIHUE — Monday is the National Day of Service and Rememberance, inspired by the incidents of Sept. 11, 2001, said Donna Olivas, director of the Kauai Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Friday during a presentation of gift baskets to various branches of emergency responders.
“This is a national observance for the Corporation for National and Community Service,” Olivas said. “RSVP is a part of that corporation in the Senior Corps division. Our advisory board decided they wanted to honor our emergency responders with gift baskets to each of the 22 branches on Kauai.”
The council said on a daily basis, fire, police, and Emergency Medical Technicians rise to respond to the community in times of need, said Bridget Arume, an RSVP Advisory Council member.
“Today, on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we support and honor all of you — Kauai’s first responders,” reads a card accompanying each of the baskets.
The baskets will be delivered Monday, Olivas said.
They include donations from local businesses including Kauai Coffee, Kauai Kookie, Aunty Lilikoi, Anahola Granola, Ha Coffee Bar, Tip Top Cafe, Starbucks-Lihue, Coconut Coast, Salty Wahine, Hapa House, Wong’s Restaurant and Omoide Bakery, and the RSVP Advisory Council. Margo Hashimoto created the greeting cards.
RSVP is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 and over. On Kauai, the RSVP operates under the county’s Agency on Elderly Affairs.
