PRINCEVILLE — Skies were clear for most of the three rounds of the annual Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, right up until the end.
Just as golfers started to finish their final rounds Tuesday, rain started to dump.
“It’s been good to be back home. The weather’s been nice,” said University of Hawaii men’s golfer and Kapaa High School alumnus Brydon Salvador. “They say it’s a thunderstorm. I’m glad it held out until the last day. But overall, it’s good be home. Just got to keep working and keep grinding.”
University of Hawaii, host of the men’s golf tournament on Kauai’s North Shore, finished 19th out of 20 teams with a final score of 40-over-par 904. UH’s B team finished 18th with 30-over-par 894.
Salvador, who played with UH’s A team, finished 19-over-par 235 (79-77-79).
“Overall, the past three days, it’s been (my) best performance so far at this tournament. Definitely can take some learning. There’s some flaws in my game that I, for sure, need to work on,” Salvador said.
He added: “It’s more on the short game. I missed a lot of putts. I couldn’t get the flatstick rolling. But overall, I would say, it’s a little bit on the mental side — trying to finish. I could start well and maintain it throughout the round, but I just can’t hold it until the end. I kind of faltered a little bit.”
UH’s Cameron Kaneko, Taiga Iwasa and Nicholaus Nelson each finished 3-over-par 219.
The Rainbow Warriors men’s team will next fly out to Maui for the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, which begins Friday.
No. 40 ranked Louisville was the top team of the tournament, finishing the three-day competition with a total score of 56-under par 808.
No. 50 San Diego State was second with 47-under par 817, and No. 36 Missouri was third with 40-under-par 824.
Louisville’s Simon Zach was first overall on the individual leaderboard with a final score of 21-under-par 195 (66-63-66).
“I’ve played here. It’s my third time here with the guys, and we just played great this week,” Zach said. “We really enjoyed it. After the round, we spent some time on the beach and having fun. We felt pretty good on the golf course. We felt relaxed, and we played good golf.
“The weather was good until the last hole, really,” he continued. “Other than that, the wind was very calm and the weather was nice. We really enjoyed it as much as we could, and we’re really glad that we won.”
Missouri senior Hayden Buckley was second individually with a 19-under-par 197 (66-61-70).
“Last year, I came in. I was just coming off an injury, so my expectations weren’t very high,” Buckley said. “I actually played well and had the lead after two rounds, and kind of struggled in the last round and lost it. I did that again (this year), but I didn’t play terrible today. I played OK and shot a 2-under.”
The Missouri senior added: “You just got to go out there and enjoy being here. I think it being my last year here, it helped relax me and (allowed me) to enjoy it.”
Georgia Southern’s Steven Fisk set a Princeville Makai course record, firing a 60 in the second round Sunday. He finished tied for third on the individual leaderboard with a final 18-under-par (71-60-67).
