WAIMEA — Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i High’s varsity boys basketball teams will face each other on Tuesday for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation first-round title at the Kaua‘i High gym.
Schedled for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff in a winner-take-all single contest, the playoff was necessitated following the results of Saturday night contests, where Kaua‘i High downed Island School, 54-32 at Kaua‘i High, and Kapa‘a ran away from Waimea, 52-37, at Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
Earlier in the final first round scheduled contests, the junior varsity Red Raiders walked off with a 53-30 win over the JV Voyagers behind Christian Vito dropping 11 points and getting support from Keanu Perreira-Inouye and Nicholas Gandeza, who each finished with eight points.
The JV Voyagers saw Pico Vaughn and Matthew Dobashi combining for 21 of Island School JV’s 30-point total. Johnny Primeaux added seven.
On the varsity court, Kaua‘i High’s Isaac Mirey bucketed 10 of his game-total 17 points to lead the Red Raiders in its win over the Voyagers. Camren Holt-Ho had seven points, and Joshua Rego had six.
Island School’s Lukas Myers, the Voyagers’ leading scorer with 12 points, was limited to just two charity points in the second half. Garret Hadley added nine markers.
Over at Clem Gomes Gym, the JV Warriors sank four of six at the charity stripe in the final 27 seconds of play to clinch a 49-44 edge over the JV Menehune.
With 27.6 ticks showing on regulation time, Kapa‘a’s Ty Kamoku, ending the contest with eight points, was one-for-two to pull Kapa‘a ahead, 46-44. Shayden Mandel went to the charity striple four times in the last 22 seconds, icing the win on his three-of-four showing. He ended with seven points. Emry Piturachsatit led the Kapa‘a JV with 15 points, and Austin Green had 12 points.
Lokahi Delos Reyes, the JV Menehunes’ top scorer with 16 points, including a first-quarter 3-ball, was limited to just a pair in the final quarter, where the Menehune’s Isaiah Sarmiento dropped six of his game-total 13 points. Diego Mariano chipped in eight points.
The varsity Warriors, led by the dual threat of Keaka Kauhane and senior Mikey Questin, quickly asserted themselves over the varsity Menehune en route to its 52-37 victory. Kauhane bucketed a game-high 18 points with Questin blossoming for 10 of his game-total 16 points in the second half. Reimel Camacho added seven points.
Waimea turned to its tall post, D. Kaohelauli‘i-Kali for scoring, the tall man finishing with 13 points in the effort. Eli Ewing contributed 10 points, and Mykah Brun added six points.
