Richard Kametaro Taylor
Richard Kametaro Taylor passed away on Sept. 14, 2022, at the age of 66. He was born on Sept. 26, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a veteran sergeant of the U. S. Air Force and a retired electronic technician with the U.S. Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands.
He was preceded in death by parents John and Satsuki Taylor and sister Suzannie Taylor.
He is survived by wife Kathie J. Taylor of Waimea, daughter Jackie T. (Ashton “Kapena” Thomas-Place) of Lihu‘e, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private celebration of life was held.
Garden Island Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
EnCarnacion ‘Carnation’ L. Carvalho
EnCarnacion “Carnation” L. Carvalho passed away at her home in Lihu‘e on Oct. 16, 2022, at the age of 87. She was born on April 27, 1935, in Koloa, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by parents John and Micaela Torres, brothers Stanley and Paul Torres and sister Cidela Imaoka.
She is survived by husband Adam Wallace Carvalho, daughters Charlotte (John Mc Farland) Camara, Joyce (Jerry) Baptista and Colleen (David Sr.) Braun, grandchildren Cheryl (Cipriano Ragocos III) Stoddard, Rhonda (Walter Dotimas) Camara, Jason (Layleigh Carveiro) Camara, Maile (Anthony) Lakatsas, Leilani (Nick) Quiroz, Lehua (Manny) Mossa, David (Summer Malina) Braun Jr., Crystal Braun and Kaylee Braun and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Nov. 10, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary chapel in Koloa. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m.
The family requests flowers be omitted and kindly asks that masks be worn.

Stephen (Steve) Martin Landis
Born 8/8/1948, Died 10/14/2022
Steve Landis was born in Glendale, California on Aug. 8, 1948, to Harry E. Landis and Ellen Martin Landis. He moved to Belmont Shore, Long Beach, when he was 6 years old, and began a love affair with the ocean that lasted for the rest of his life.
He attended Lowell Elementary, Rogers Middle School, and Woodrow Wilson High School, where he played varsity football. He earned a master’s degree in physical education and a life teaching credential from California State University Long Beach, where he also played varsity football and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
After graduation from CSULB in 1971, he married Jill Davis Landis, his college sweetheart. He went on to teach and coach football at Jordan High School and his alma mater, Wilson High School, under Head Coach Jon Meyer. An avid snow skier, he became the Wilson Ski Club advisor. Steve was also an accomplished surfer, kite surfer and golfer.
While teaching, the couple invested in real estate and retired early. As Jill grew a career in writing, Steve became an actor and model. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. They bought a home in Hawai‘i in 1978. Steve paddled outrigger canoes competitively for Hanalei Canoe Club and Namolokama Canoe Club. Over the years, he and his teammates won a wall full of gold medals. He also became an accomplished Hawaiian slack-key guitar player.
He passed on Oct. 14, 2022, after a long illness. He’s survived by wife Jill, brother James Landis, nieces and nephew, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and cousin Christopher Martin. He was a kind and loving man who will be missed by a huge ‘ohana. A celebration of life will be held in Hanalei in the spring of 2023. Mahalo to Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home. Juanita Annie Cabanting
Juanita Annie Cabanting, 97, of Kapa‘a, passed away on Oct. 19, 2022. She was born on April 16, 1925, in the Philippines. She was a retired retail clerk.
She was preceded in death by husband Macario Cabating.
She is survived by sons Macky (Lisa) Cabanting of Bellevue, Washington and Richard Cabanting of Kapa‘a, daughters Merlinda (Louie) Pelekai of Honolulu and Lee Ann-Nalani Cabanting of Honolulu, grandchildren Moses Cabanting, Joshua Pelekai, Sean Cabanting and Brian Cabanting, and great-grandchildren Paxton Cabanting and Whitney Cabanting.
Private services were held.
Future memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Theodore Vincente Castillo
Theodore Vincente Castillo passed away on Oct. 17, 2022, in Kapa‘a, at the age of 75. He was born on May 22, 1947, in Waimea. He was a telephone lineman for Pacific Bell and served during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by father Isidoro Castillo, mother Helen Perreira, brother David J. Castillo and sister Yvonne Castillo Gibson.
He is survived by wife Celeste Castillo of Wailua, stepson Joseph (Kehau Durant) Ornellas of Koloa, daughter Jodi (Derek) Castillo Boni of Chico, California, stepdaughters Lavanna (Joseph Sr.) LaBarbera of Hanapepe and Tiffany (James) Lupton of Tacoma, Washington, grandchild Kayla Demel, step-grandchildren Shaela-Ann, Shaena-Lyn and Shaedn-Jon Ornellas, Joseph LaBarbera Jr. and Katherin and Kayden Lupton, great-grandchild Ben Taber, brother Gerald (Myra) Castillo of Riverdale, Georgia, sister Judy (Hamilton) Rodrigues of Las Vegas, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Friday, Nov. 11, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i. Visitation with family is from 4 to 5 p.m. followed by services at 5 p.m. Inurnment will take place at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 9 a.m.
The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Calvin Mitsuru Kaipoleimanu Murayama
Calvin Mitsuru Kaipoleimanu Murayama, 51, of Hilo, Hawai‘i Island, passed away on Sept. 18, 2022, in Hilo. He was born on June 19, 1971, in Waimea. He was a cook.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Craddock and Ruth Yorkman and Denji and Masako Murayama.
He is survived by children Joshua and Ashley Murayama of Wai‘anae, mother Rosebelle K. Hansen of Waimea, father Calvin M. (Mary) Murayama of Texas, brothers Boyd (Ed Lilley) Murayama of Arizona, Miles (Martha) Murayama of Texas and Conrad (Coralyn) Murayama of Lawa‘i, sister Shanlynn (Randy) Seto of Waimea, and numerous nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
A celebration of life was held.
Robert S. LaMadrid
Robert S. LaMadrid passed away peacefully on Oct. 13, 2022, in Puhi at the age of 95. He was born on July 29, 1927. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by parents Anacleto LaMadrid and Mary Cabasa, past wife Josephine LaMadrid, siblings Gladys Kimura, James LaMadrid and Albert LaMadrid.
He is survived by wife Marina LaMadrid, children Elyson (Thomas) Perry, Robert (Maria) LaMadrid Jr., Cookie (Victor) Weeks, Jennifer LaMadrid and Lauren (Steven) Hunt, grandchildren Toby (Jamie) Kakehi, Madison (Christian) Marston, Jarred (Michelle) Perry, Alexander LaMadrid, Elizabeth (David) Aguilera, Michelle LaMadrid, Noah (Sara) LaMadrid, Robyn (Anthony) Cuaresma, Taylor Weeks, Chase (Joshua) LaMadrid-Engel, Blaise LaMadrid-Nakamura, Conor Hunt and Mason Hunt.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Nov. 12, at the social hall of the Kapa‘a Hongwanji Temple. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. with celebration of life services to follow at 10:45 a.m. The family suggests casual attire.
Charles Joseph Silva Sr.
Charles Joseph Silva Sr. passed away on Oct. 28, 2022, in Kalaheo at the age of 90. He was born on Sept. 1, 1932, in Makaweli. He was a retired cultivation superintendent for McBryde Sugar Company.
He was preceded in death by wife Lillian Muraoka Silva, parents Louis and Minnie Pavao Silva, brothers Paul (Helen) Silva, William (Alice) Silva and Louis (Emily) Silva, brothers-in-law Alfred Hart and Takeo Okuno and sons-in-law Rudy Alao and Errol Lanning.
He is survived by son Charles (Della) Silva Jr. of Koloa, daughters Carolyn (Ronnie) Dotario of Kalaheo, Marilyn Alao of Kalaheo, Theresa (George) Castillo of Kohala, Bonnie Lanning of Hanapepe and Lynn (Teddy) Perreira of Kalaheo, sister Caroline Hart of Honoka‘a, Hawai‘i Island, sister-in-law Elethia Okuno of ‘Oma‘o, caregivers Leilani and Kahena Cox, 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is Friday, Nov. 18, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation with family is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m.

Helena M. Bustillos
Helena M. Bustillos, 89, of Hanama‘ulu, peacefully passed away on Oct. 24, 2022, at Pali Momi on O‘ahu. She was born on Feb. 3, 1933 in Lihu‘e, and retired from Elsie H. Wilcox Elementary School (maintenance department).
She was preceded in death by her parents Erenia and Francisco Malbas, husband Feliciano Bustillos and sister Corazon Bantolinao.
She is survived by children Andrew (Ann) Bustillos, Aileen (George, deceased) Kupihea, Larena (John McDonald) Bustillos and Eugene (Anna) Bustillos, grandchildren Stanford (Kerri) Bustillos, Aaron (Lucinda, deceased) Bustillos, Andie Bustillos, Dominique (Sheldon) Gallarde, Helena (Dave) Sundberg, Carl (Christina) Kupihea, Rachel Bustillos and Katie Arzaga, nine great-grandchildren, sisters Roquina Tagara and Cipriana Fernandez, and relatives of the Malbas and Bustillos families.
A celebration of life is Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Immaculate Conception Church, with viewing from 9 a.m., eulogy at 9:45 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. Wearing masks in church is appreciated. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Jo Ann Padre Shimamoto
Jo Ann Padre Shimamoto, of Kapa‘a, passed away at The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu Oct. 8, 2022, at the age of 73. She was born on Kaua‘i on Dec. 21, 1948, and retired from the County of Kaua‘i housing agency as the Community Development Block Grant coordinator. She was the backbone of her family and someone everyone could turn to and count on.
She was preceded in death by her parents Jacinto and Gladys Padre and grandson Gabriel Shimamoto.
She is survived by husband Patrick Shimamoto, sons Gavin (Gwynn) Shimamoto and Tyson Shimamoto, daughter Megan (Mordecai Calhoun) Shimamoto, grandchildren Grayson Shimamoto, Gabrielle Shimamoto, Garexson Shimamoto and Malia Calhoun, brothers Jay Padre and James (Deborah) Padre, sisters Janice (Mike) Plumer and Jayne Padre, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Nov. 12, at St. Catherine Church, with visitation at 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 9 a.m. Private burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Anna Arcio Reyta
Anna Arcio Reyta, 102, took her final breath on Oct. 13, 2022. Angels escorted her from her home in Lawa‘i to her new home in heaven. She was born on Aug. 11, 1920, in Lahaina, Maui, to Francisco and Mary (Ivanoff) Arcio. She was the eldest of four children and grew up in plantation camps on Maui and Moloka‘i until the family moved to Honolulu in 1938.
She was preceded in death by husband Larry M. Reyta, parents, brother James M. Arcio, sister-in-law Avelina Bacani Arcio, brother-in-law Ruperto C. Manese and sister-in-law Mary Jane Arcio.
She is survived by daughter Lucy Adamos (David) Kawate of Lawa‘i, granddaughter Adin (Tim Murphy) Kawate of Bloomington, Indiana, grandson Joel Kawate (Tanya Carranza, Kale and Paloma Nelson) of Kalaheo, sister Connie Manese, brother Francis Arcio Jr., family friend Richard “Dale” Blackburn, all of San Diego, nephews and nieces Randy A. (Ester) Manese, Marian (Peter) Inova, Dr. Jeanne (Dr. Don Maurer) Manese, nephews Steven (Marissa) Arcio, Brian (Christina, deceased) Arcio, nephews and nieces Gregoire Arcio (deceased), Jeffoire Arcio, Diedre Malia Arcio and Eric (Robin) Arcio, and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Her family would like to thank Dr. J. Michael Murray and staff, caregivers Marites Anacleto, Jan Pascua, Joyce Kraszeski, Shirley Tripoli, Jill Mellenthin, Hanna Serrano, Cornelia Works and Zina Hough, Kaua‘i Hospice, Pastors John Zimmerman, Wesley Cronk and Curtis Bell, and the family at Kalaheo Missionary Church. A private memorial service will be observed at Kalaheo Missionary Church, with interment at Hawai‘i Memorial Park in Kane‘ohe on O‘ahu, with dates to be determined.
