Carl Kainoa ‘Hosey’ Hose Jr.
Carl Kainoa “Hosey” Hose Jr. passed away at his home in Puhi on June 5, 2022, at the age of 71. He was born on Oct. 6, 1950 in Kalaoa, Hawai‘i. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He was a retired truck driver for Kaua‘i Commercial Company and Aloha Isle Moving.
He was preceded in death by parents Carl Ka‘ainoa Hose Sr. and Margaret Mahi Hose, sisters Margaret Puanani Kephart and Jameslyn U‘ilani Artates, and brother Eric Eremia Hose.
He is survived by sisters Barbara Jeannie Miles and Deanna Mahilani Moala, sons Carl (Donna) Hose and Dillon “Manö” (‘Ilima) Hose Sr., daughter Delilah “Behbeh” (Darrell) Pundyke, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild on the way, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His celebration of life is at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center on Saturday, July 30, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Marina B. Balagat
Marina B. Balagat, 93, of Hanama‘ulu, passed away on June 28, 2022, at Wilcox Medical Center. She was born in Dingras, Philippines, on Nov. 29, 1928, and retired as a cook from Tip-Top Café.
She was preceded in death by parents Apolonio and Gaudencia Ballesteros, husband Guillermo Balagat Sr., son Guillermo Balagat Jr., and brothers Aquilino and Elpedio Ballesteros.
She is survived by daughter Grace (Henry) Hee of Hanama‘ulu, sons Ceny (Josephine) Balagat of Killeen, Texas and George Balagat of Hanama‘ulu, sisters Estella Rocapor of Dingras, Philippines, Josefina Alegre of Dingras, Philippines and Rosalia Butal of Mindanao, Philippines, grandchildren Josef (Kelsey Green) Hee of Havelock, North Carolina, Jacob Hee of Madison, Wisconsin, Zachary Hee of Havelock, North Carolina, Royden Balagat of Killeen, Texas and Abigail (Nathaniel Jr.) Moses of German Town, Tennessee, Garren (Dawnie) Leanio-Balagat of Lihu‘e, Darren Leanio-Balagat of Anahola, Kekai (Ramsey Tacadena) Leanio-Balagat of Koloa, Alexa ChongTim-Balagat and Braden ChongTim-Balagat of Hanama‘ulu, great-grandchildren Ashton Balagat of Lihu‘e, Taylan Moses, Nivea Moses and Titan Moses of German Town, Tennessee, numerous relatives and her beloved Kawaihau Senior Softball ‘ohana.
A celebration of life is Thursday, July 14, at Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. with services at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘’i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Masajiro Habu
Masajiro Habu passed away on June 27, 2022, at Sterling Ridge Assisted Living Center, at the age of 99. He was born on May 27, 1923, in Lihu‘e. He retired in 1985 as a welder for McBryde Sugar Company and served in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by parents Uichiro and Okame Habu, sisters Yasuno Fujii and Annie Iwamoto and son-in-law Vicente Fermin.
He is survived by wife Marjorie Habu, just made their 69-year wedding anniversary, son Derek (Hana) Habu, daughter Corine Fermin, sister Satsuki Yokote, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Inurnment will be at a later date at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Palm Cemetery and Neptune Society are assisting the family with arrangements.
Virginia A. Rapozo
Virginia A. Rapozo, 97, who was born in and lived in Kalaheo, passed away on May 17, 2022 at Wilcox Medical Center in Lihu‘e. She attended Kalaheo School and graduated from Waimea High School. While working on O‘ahu, she met, fell in love with and married Frank Rapozo, the love of her life. They were married for 53 years until his passing in 2003.
Frank and Virginia returned to Kalaheo to start their life together, and raised a daughter and a son. Besides being an industrious homemaker, she was a forward-thinking rancher who was always trying to improve their small herd. Raising cattle, horses, plants, gardening, fishing, hunting, cooking and storytelling were a few of her many joys.
She was preceded in death by parents John and Mary Costa Ayres, sisters Emily (Frank) Souza and Frances Corral, brothers Joaquin (Nancy) Corral, Manuel (Frances) Corral and Joseph (Carrie) Corral.
She is survived by daughter Barbara (Lawrence) Rego and son John Rapozo, grandchildren Tamara (Jeffrey Garcia) Rego, Andrew (Paula) Rego, Alithia Rapozo and Nicholas Rapozo, great-grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Malia and Marcus Manipon, Isaac, Nathan and Noah Rego, brother Antone (Josephine) Corral, caregivers Diane C. Cooke and Helen Mattingly, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private service, with burial to follow, will be held at Holy Cross Church on July 21.

Sovaleni Malani Isaiah Lucidarme-Musika
Sovaleni Malani Isaiah Lucidarme-Musika, of Wailua, passed away peacefully at his home on May 7, 2022, at the age of 26. He was born on April 23, 1996, in Lihu‘e.
He was preceded in death by great-grandparents Bill and Mardi Lucidarme, Fusae and Rufino Castillo, grandparents Ronald Charles Lucidarme and Alamita Lemani Musika and uncle Robby Scott Silva.
He is survived by mother Nicole (Junya Ramos) Lucidarme, father Uasi F. Musika, sister Vaimoana (Tyrell Aipa-Rivera) Musika, hanai brother Raymond Duarte, children Anelakai Lucidarme-Rapozo and Kainakoa Lucidarme-Rapozo, and grandparents Ka‘ohu and Carolyn Cummings and Sova Musika Sr.

Marc E. Guyot
Marc E. Guyot, 62, of Austin, Texas, passed away on May 27, 2022, after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on March 5, 1960, in Los Angeles, and moved to Hawai‘i in the 1980s. He lived on the islands of O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai‘i (Big Island) and Kaua‘i. He worked for a car-rental company, was a service writer for car dealerships, and had his own photography business, to name a few.
In 1998, he went to California Western School of Law, San Diego, earning his law degree. In 2005, he was appointed as the a county deputy prosecuting attorney and then a deputy county attorney, both for the County of Kaua‘i. He was also a master mason of Kaua‘i Lodge F. & A.M. (Free & Associated Masons) in Lihu‘e, since 2013. In 2014, he moved to Austin, Texas, and worked most recently as the director of enterprise risk, strategic programs, at the Texas State Office of Risk Management.
He is survived by wife Yoko Watabe, from Japan (they met in Honolulu in 1998), brother Mike Guyot of Tujunga, California, sister Michelle Frener of Seaside, California, niece Alix Guyot of Harvard, Illinois, nephew Jesse Frener of Salinas, California, numerous friends who became family, and his Shiba Inu dogs Miko and Shiro.
He is now resting in his Lazy Boy recliner, devouring smoked brisket, drinking beers, and laughing his booming laugh that we all loved so much.

Dean (Deane) B. Abben
Dean (Deane) B. Abben passed away on June 17, 2022 in Hanama‘ulu, at the age of 98. He was born on May 13, 1924 in Little Rock, Iowa. He went to USC and studied dramatics. He worked for an aircraft company during World War II in California and for a mining company in Idaho, where he learned to fly and obtained his pilot license. He was also a salesman for NRC.
He came to Kaua‘i in 1964 to build the Kaua‘i Resort Hotel. He also had a ski water show called Wailua Gardens. He was self-employed and started his own Hanama‘ulu store, which opened in 1968 and closed in 1985. He started Hanama‘ulu Trading Company in 1977, which he managed until 2001, due to being blind in both eyes from macular degeneration. He enjoyed collecting antiques and cars. Many businesses got their start from him. He was also a participant of the multi-ethnic cohort study since its inception. His medical records are studied and will benefit for future generations.
He was preceded in death by son Gary Abben, parents Benjamin and Zella Abben, sisters Ruthene Kerslake and Zelma Fortney, mother-in-law Ines Lazaro and brother-in-law Colin Sunada.
He is survived by wife Joaquina “Kina” L. Abben, son Philip Abben of Oregon, father-in-law Andres Lazaro of Kapa‘a, brothers and sisters-in-law Dino (Mary Beth) Lazaro of Kalaheo and Nerio (Alida) Lazaro of Brydeswood, sisters-in-law Venus Lazaro of Lihu‘e, Mary Sunada of Lihu‘e and Virginia Bragg of Kapa‘a, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
According to his wishes, a private scattering of ashes will be at a later date.

Maikolo Hola (Kolo Boi) Koli
Maikolo Hola (Kolo Boi) Koli passed away at his home on May 27, 2022, at the age of 31. He was born on July 13, 1990, in Lihu‘e. He was a mason, rock wall builder and construction worker for Koli Contractor and Tree Trimming.
He was preceded in death by grandfather Sam Pa.
He is survived by parents Angelina and Lealiki Koli, hanai son Sosaia Koli, goddaughters Amene Kanahele, Kaleopule Kanahele and Hi‘ilani Pa, Sekope Sitani, hanai daughters Norma Perez and Siosiana Hui Ah Sam, grandparents Darlene “Yvonne” Pa, Taniela and Lepeka Koli, sisters Kalei (Pomaika‘i) Kanahele, Kaho (Angel) Garcia and Lepeka (Tim Ford) Koli, hanai sister Keahi Tita Apana, brother Taniela (Lisa) Koli, hanai brother Kalani Pa, nieces Valina and Anela Garcia, Kaylea “Honey Honey” Lupe Koli and Palomesi Ford, nephews Taniela Koli and Timothy Ford, and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life is Saturday, July 16, at the Sam Pa residence, 3887 Mahuahua Road, Anahola, with visitation at 9 a.m. and services at 10 a.m.

Teeana Kaleimokihana Valpoon
Teeana Kaleimokihana Valpoon passed away on Sept. 17, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center at the age of 32. She was born on July 15, 1989, in Lihu‘e and was a graduate of Kapa‘a High School. She worked for Wyndham and Kuhio Motors.
She was preceded in death by sister Mistie K. Valpoon, grandfather Clifford Matsushima Sr., and grandmother Beverly Ann Valpoon.
She is survived by son Liloa (Elijah) Ragsac, parents Leah “Teete” (Russell Iida) Matsushima and Amil “Ekolu” (Nani) Valpoon, brother Cody (Ipo) Valpoon, stepbrothers Cody and Josh (Rylee Pavao) Mersberg, grandmother Katherine Matsushima, grandfather Amil “Tinoa” Valpoon, nephews Lokahi, Lawai‘a and Kaikoa, niece Lihau, and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins who loved her dearly.
A celebration of life is Saturday, July 16, at Ko‘olau Hui‘ia Church, Anahola, with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at noon.
