What? No Ono Pops? Candace Boxer said the icy treats are now from Maui as Hawaiian Popsicles.
The change was made recently, in time for the Kaua‘i Pride Parade and Festival, where an ice-cold treat using locally sourced product was the answer to the hot Saturday sun.
Kudos to the Kaua‘i Pride Parade Committee on organizing a huge event that rivaled last year’s drive-by parade. This year, the parade was in-person (watch out for those bombs near the chicken and ribs place) with Aggi Marti getting her ‘ohana together for a float.
Kudos, too, to Alice Luck, Nani Apalla, Shy Sadora and all those Kaua‘i Planning & Action and Keiki to Career people for getting the Kaua‘i High School students actively involved. Ken Carvalho said their float was a replica of a Fun and Kwazy Ride. He was filling in for Mike Contrades, who was under the weather, in accompanying gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele and his family in the parade.
There was the parade overflow as people filled in the craft fair at the Grove Farm Market (Rhonda Liu said she would’ve done the parade but was already committed to the market, and Dr. Brian Yamamoto had some of the parade leaders shopping for produce before the market closed). OK, so what’s the plan for bon dance?
Moana, Mele and Lion Hurley (they do a great puppet show on endangered species!) overflowed to the World Oceans Day preview at Kukui Grove Center, where Melissa McFerrin said one of the Showtime Characters — no, we want the baby shark — will be doing Toddler Tuesdays starting at 11 a.m., and Jean Souza and her National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admiistration intern Abigail Seibel will have the make-it-and-take-it honu jigsaw puzzle on Wednesday from 2 p.m. (it’s the real World Oceans Day, Emily Broderick of Kaua‘i Community College!).
