PO‘IPU — For 21 years, the Paniolo Heritage Rodeo at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu has opened the Koloa Plantation Days Festival in July.
It’s back for the 21st time Friday through Sunday, July 22 to 24. The Kaua‘i Roping & Rodeo Club perpetuates the authentic cultural experience of today’s unique Hawaiian paniolo lifestyle and heritage.
Crowds cheer-on the high-stake races, bold, fast-action ride and roping sports, family fun and extreme excitement at the ocean-view, open-air arena.
There will be paniolo food, a beer garden, vendors, exhibits, entertainment and more.
This year, online pre-ticketing is simple on kauairodeo.com with the new, innovative QR code for one day for $10/person or a three-day ticket for $25. Keiki under 18 with ticketed adult are admitted free.
On Friday, July 22, gates open at 4 p.m. Action starts at 5 p.m. with a grand entry including a historical re-enactment with Captain Vancouver, Cows and King Kamehameha. Then hold on for barrels, broncs, wild bulls and high-dollar roping. Music in the Country after the events continues into the evening.
Saturday, July 23 begins at 8 a.m. with preliminary roping and trials. The gates open at 4 p.m., action starts at 5 p.m., with the grand entry special Captain Vancouver, Cows, and King Kamehameham and flag processional.
Paniolo historian David Wolman, author of “Aloha Cowboy,” will be on hand for book-signings.
On Sunday, July 24, gates open at 11 a.m., with action from noon including a special grand entry, flag presentation, and the flower-bedecked pa‘u lady riders. The keiki calf scramble is just a slice of the family fun that day. An awards ceremony will take place and all-around winners will be announced.
