Thursday is the fifth day of the fifth month, or Boys Day (who changed it to Kodomo Day? Children’s Day is in June), and shoppers seeking the iconic Boys Day koinobori lucked out because Peach Alpeche of Little Pea (remember them doing all those fundraisers to help little guys?) had an assortment from Tara of Hapa House (the Downtown Lihu‘e Night Market happens AFTER Boys Day!) because Peach said mamas gotta help each other.

The koi are also flying in Kapaia Valley (did you drop off some food for the Lihu‘e Hongwanji Women’s Association drive to benefit the Backpack Brigade?). Mahalo to Larraine Moriguchi and the Kapaia Foundation who has pictures of the koinobori flying in the valley back in the early 1900s. The koinobori and the Kapaia bridge make for some interesting photos, especially with the story boards.
Debbie Yanagihara (she’s been so busy with work she can only coordinate the fairs at the Church of the Pacific and the Kaua‘i Veterans Center, where she brings the crafters — this time there were 15 of them, including Little Pea, which was showing for the first time, and Jock Goodman (good thing the swell went down). Debbie said the proceeds from the Kaua‘i Veterans Center fair go toward helping the Kaua‘i Veterans Museum. Next craft fair at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center is May 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
