KAPA‘A — The Kaua‘i Police Department hosts a public virtual meeting Wednesday, Aug. 25, regarding the draft environmental assessment for the proposed $8 million Kawaihau police substation.

KPD is in the early planning stages to build a new Kawaihau police substation,and is seeking the public’s input pertaining to a the draft EA, which can be accessed at oeqc2.doh.hawaii.gov/Doc_Library/2021-07-23-KA-DEA-Kauai-Police-Department-Kapaa-Substation.pdf.
The published document is provided as an opportunity to notify the public of the proposed project, offer interested parties the ability to review the proposed plans, and solicit public comments regarding the proposal.
The proposed project is a 7,000-square-foot building. KPD has made a proposal to the Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation to build the substation on an unused portion of land at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, immediately east of the Kawaihau and Iwaena roads intersection.
Currently, the Kapa‘a armory building serves as KPD’s temporary Eastside substation.
The proposed single-story building would provide neighborhood public access to police services and include general administrative spaces and offices, a temporary holding area, interview rooms, a break room, a squad room, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a multi-purpose training room, bathrooms and other support spaces.
Comments on the draft EA should be submitted by today. Submit comments or requests to Doug Haigh, Building Division chief in the county Department of Public Works, at dhaigh@kauai.gov or by mail to 4444 Rice St., Suite 175, Lihu‘ʿe, HI 96766-13450.

How is it that affordable housing gets built for $150 a square foot, but police stations cost $1,150 a square foot?
Perhaps that’s the all-in cost, fully outfitted?
KPD tried this trick before.
One-dollar a year lease is a sweet deal. This is the same TMK parcel that was set aside for beneficiaries and is more appropriate to existing 50-year old Hick’s Homes subdivision-addition than invasive COK KPD.
