HONOLULU — The Hawai‘i Education Association, one of the oldest local nonprofits in Hawai‘i, is seeking testimonies from the public on “How A Teacher Made a Difference in Your Life,” in honor of its centennial anniversary celebration.
HONOLULU — The Hawai‘i Education Association, one of the oldest local nonprofits in Hawai‘i, is seeking testimonies from the public on “How A Teacher Made a Difference in Your Life,” in honor of its centennial anniversary celebration.
HEA wants to showcase testimonials via social media and on its website about amazing teachers to highlight the impact and importance of our local educators.
Janice Bond, a HEA state board member, said one teacher who impacted her was an elementary-school instructor. “Mine was my sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Maggie Hamamoto, who used to take me home to her house in Wailua Houselots and teach me to sew after school,” Bond said.
“My parents both worked, and I enjoyed her time teaching me to make my first skirt. Priscilla Leong was an elementary-school teacher who taught me the love of reading books.”
In a letter about the effort, June Motokawa, HEA president, said teachers are a great source of encouragement, inspiration, and advisers for positive life transformations.
“Many of us have had a teacher who has made a major impact on our lives or helped us to simply do better,” Motokawa said. “This is an opportunity to highlight the story of a teacher who has made a deep or significant impact in your own life or recognizes the excellence you have witnessed in your own colleagues.”
According to Motokawa, these stories will be used to help HEA commemorate this milestone as well as shine a light on Hawai‘i’s educators and the profession of teaching.
“We hope that you will participate in this opportunity to share your stories about inspirational teachers,” Motokawa said.
