IRVINE, Calif. —The University of Hawai‘i women’s basketball team scheduled to have two consecutive games against UC-Irvine had Saturday afternoon’s contest canceled because of COVID-19 concerns.
The Wahine women’s basketball team (3-4, 2-3) released a public statement regarding the second portion of the Big West Conference series that was supposed to play Saturday at UC-Irvine’s gymnasium.
“Due to an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our student-athletes, today’s women’s basketball game has been canceled,” the University of Hawai‘i announced on its Twitter account.
The Wahine lost to the Anteaters 86-68 in Friday afternoon’s contest.
Hawai‘i had four players in double figures.
Amy Atwell led the team with 16 points, and Jadynn Alexander finished the contest with 13 points.
Kasey Neubert and Kelsie Imai finished with 12 each.
The Wahine struggled on defense, allowing five members of the Anteaters to finish the game in double figures.
The scoring distribution ended up being the difference in the game.
Kayla Williams led UC Irvine with 20 points. Chloe Webb, Alexus Seaton and Caiyle Kaupu finished with 11 each.
Haleigh Talbert and Sophia Locandro each finished the game with 10.
The starting five of the Anteaters outscored the entire Wahine team.
Hawai‘i is scheduled to host San Diego next at 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday at the SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
