Books for Newborns, a program promoted by Kaua‘i Association for Family and Community Education, is looking for new and slightly-used book donations. KAFCE encourages families to read aloud, talk story and sing with children to help them develop language and literacy skills, and the Books for Newborns program looks to get kids started early.
Books for Newborns, a program promoted by Kaua‘i Association for Family and Community Education, is looking for new and slightly-used book donations. KAFCE encourages families to read aloud, talk story and sing with children to help them develop language and literacy skills, and the Books for Newborns program looks to get kids started early.
Access to books may be an issue for some families. KAFCE purchases and collects new and used books annually with others who share this same goal. In 2020 KAFCE partnered with Usborne Books &More to purchase 250 books. Along with 50 collected books, 300 books were labeled and donated to Wilcox Medical Center pediatrics for distribution to Kaua‘i families.
Wilcox Medical Center pediatrics participate in the “Reach Out and Read” program. Researchers confirm that quality time spent reading to children daily will aid in the children’s language, listeing and brain development.
Reading while holding a child close can help them manage moments of anxiety and create a positive association with reading that endures throughout their lifetime.
KAFCE begins their book drive in March.
A staunch supporter of reading to children, the National Education Association enables communities to host Read Across America Day annually on a school day closest to March 2 each year.
The popular children’s author Dr. Seuss had his birthday on March 2.
