PUHI — Title Guaranty Lihu‘e escrow officer Casey Tanigawa was late to the presentation Thursday at the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch offices and warehouse in the Puhi Industrial Park.
But it did not matter, as Tanigawa waved a handful of bills, including one that read $100 on it, as she joined the presentation where Katherine Apao, the Title Guaranty account manager, turned over $400, representing 1,000 meals through Title Guaranty’s Kokua program.
“Title Guaranty has been giving every year since the company started in 1896,” Apao said. “That’s more than 120 years that Title Guaranty has been contributing to Hawai‘i communities through the various nonprofit agencies.”
Under terms of the Kokua program, five meals were set aside for every transaction handled by Title Guaranty, with an original goal of raising for 10,000 meals throughout the state network of Title Guaranty.
“We got help for our Realtors and mortgage sellers,” Apao said. “We thank them for their generosity. They have been supporting us for a long time.”
The final Kokua program yielded 12,500 meals, not counting the final handful of bills brought in by Tanigawa. Proceeds of the campaign were shared by the Hawai‘i Foodbank, the Maui Food Bank, and the Food Basket on Hawai‘i Island.
Wes Perreira, the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch manager, said the contribution was most appreciated, coming at a time when food demand increases because of the holidays.
Add to the equation the food demand created by the global pandemic that hit the islands eight months ago.
The Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch hosted its final Kokua No Ka ‘Ohana food distribution Saturday, serving 700 families. Since the start of the Kokua No Ka ‘Ohana distributions, more than 107,200 pounds, excluding the Saturday distribution, have gone out since the program started on Sept. 24.
Perreira said he is contemplating another food distribution between Thanksgiving and Christmas to help families with food during the holidays.
Chyenne Beach, community development specialist for the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch, said the Safeway stores — both the Kaua‘i Village and Hokulei Village Shopping Center stores — are hosting their annual RiceGiving food drive this weekend.
Is that the same ‘title guarantee escrow services’ owned by David Pietsch?
David Pietsch was interviewed by Gary T. Kubota a Wailuku Maui Correspondent and I quote Mr. Pietsch “The oIsnly state in the union where the state’s title is no good”. What’s with that?
