LIHU‘E — Normally, about this time, the Kaua‘i United Way would be preparing for its golf tournament fundraiser.
The golf tournament is a highlight of its fundraising efforts for its umbrella of agencies that serve the social service needs of the entire island.
But the COVID-19 pandemic rules out any golf tournament for this year.
Leave it up to the Kaua‘i United Way leaders to come up with a fun way to answer the dilemma of not being able to host a golf tournament, and still allow golfers, and even non-golfers to help raise funds for the Kaua‘i United Way.
The KUW leaders and staff are hosting its first golf ball drop where participants can donate for numbered tickets that will be matched to a numbered golf ball.
All of these balls, and more to come up with a competitive field, will be dropped from a helicopter on Oct. 11 onto a golf green at the Hokuala Ocean Course where the numbered golf balls closest to the hole will win a share of the prize cache created from donations from Kaua‘i United Way community donors.
Some of these prizes include the First Prize of $1,500 in cash, a Kaua‘i Staycation compliments of the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa, a $500 gift card courtesy of Gather Federal Credit Union, and more.
Participants will be able to watch their ball drop live on the Kaua‘i United Way Facebook page, Oct. 11 as the Jack Harter helicopter approaches the designated hole and makes its drop of the golf balls.
Donations for golf balls is currently open, and participants are able to secure a golf ball for a $10 donation at https://tinyurl.com/y4zbagmn, or by visiting the Kaua‘i United Way website at www.kauaiunitedway.org and clicking on the golf ball drop tab.
