LIHU‘E — A free training program offered by Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network is now accepting online applications from Kaua‘i residents who want the tools and knowledge to make positive changes in their communities.
The Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) develops participants into community advocates by teaching them about the political system and cultivating their leadership and communication skills. During the 20-week program, participants will focus on identifying issues that impact children and practice using their new skills by completing hands-on projects in their communities.
“Each year, PLTI transforms parents and caregivers into leaders and advocates, and they’re already making a difference in their communities,” said Deborah Zysman, Executive Director of Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network. “It’s a unique program in the state, and it’s important because people already know the challenges facing their communities — PLTI teaches them how to create solutions.”
Since 2015, PLTI has had five cohorts in Hawai‘i resulting in over 60 alumni on O‘ahu and Maui. This year, there will be two statewide PLTI cohorts; classes will be held virtually via the video conferencing platform Zoom once a week, starting in October 2020 and ending March 2021. All community members that are passionate about the welfare of children are encouraged to apply at https://www.hawaii-can.org/plti. PLTI is organized by the nonprofit Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network, which is dedicated to ensuring that all keiki are safe, healthy, and ready to learn.
