Senators push for extra census time, as court prods deadline

Census taker Paul Trujillo takes a headcount of residents at a home on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. One member of the household hadn’t filled out their decennial Census form, which can be done by mail, online, or over the phone and takes about five minutes to complete. New Mexico officials worry the coronavirus pandemic and limited internet access will lead to a severe undercount of state residents, leading to millions in lost federal funds. ORLANDO, Fla. — As lawyers in a court hearing argued over what would happen if the U.S. Census Bureau blew a deadline to turn over data used for redrawing congressional districts, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators on Tuesday introduced a bill pushing the deadline into next year, even though a previous effort hasn’t gone anywhere in the Senate.
