LIHU‘E — “We are in the planning stages of trying to Make A Splash, virtual,” said Jason Fujinaka of the county Department of Water Wednesday during the County of Kaua‘i Employee Council COVID-19 Back to School supply distribution in the Vidinha Stadium parking lot.
The backpacks traditionally used by fourth-grade students at the annual Project Wet Hawai‘i water-education event were pressed into service to hold assorted school supplies, including the basic No. 2 pencils, a wire-bound tablet, paper towels, a pair of face masks, and a variety of information on school safety and COVID-19 well-being.
Kaleo Carvalho of the Mayor’s Office said the Employee Council planned distributing 300 of these packs to families of county employees, coordinating the distribution to the day’s end.
County employees had an hour to collect their bounty from Mayor Derek Kawakami or Managing Director Michael Dahilig in the drive-thru format duplicated from the county’s earlier food distribution.
“I am so proud of all of you, for how well you are handling everything that is going on with the COVID-19 pandemic,” Kawakami wrote in special notes in each bag. “As you go back to school, I would like you to know that your health and safety is our utmost priority. Remember, when you go back to school, please be safe by wearing a mask, wash your hands frequently, and keep your distance as much as possible.”
