LIHU‘E — Explorers ages 8 to 13 are diving into Coral Reef Kids Camp this summer, starting June 29, where they’ll learn about the underwater environment around Kaua‘i and its plants and animals.
The outdoor camp program, run by Reef Guardians Hawai‘i, is designed for kids who are good swimmers and enjoy snorkeling. Snorkel gear is provided.
Half-price scholarships and free tuition are available by sending a request to reefguardianshawaii@gmail.com. Reef Guardians’ education programs are supported by community donations and grants, as well as a contributing team of board members and community volunteers.
Director Robin Mazor said: “Our dedicated staff and partners have put together an exciting program to share with Kaua‘i keiki and young teens. We are grateful to be able to dive in with these beautiful children while they explore and fall in love with glorious nature, express themselves artistically, study, document and become advocates and stewards. It’s a grand adventure for all.”
Reef Guardians Hawaii, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operates this science and art environmental education program during all school breaks throughout the year. Summer Reef Camp sessions run four days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Registration is now open online at reefguardians.org or Reef Guardians Hawai‘i on Facebook.
At Reef Camp, participants explore and study the world of fish and other marine animals, algae and the physical features that provide their home environment.
This program is taught from ecological, Hawaiian and scientific perspectives, encouraging values of stewardship, curiosity and a quest for learning. A team of professional marine biologists and educators conduct the program, and skilled volunteers assist in and out of the water.
The program partners include Aaron Swink with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources and Surfrider Foundation Kaua‘i.
“Surfrider is excited and happy to be partnering with Reef Guardians again at Reef Camp. The kids are our future and give us hope for protecting our environment and making better choices,” said Surfrider’s Barbara Weidner.
