HONOLULU — When the State Legislature passed its $5.1 billion Capital Improvement Project budget bill May 21 for Fiscal Years 2020 and 2021, more than $217 million was set aside for projects on Kaua‘i.
“We are in a time of financial crisis so Capital Improvement Projects are critical to help spur our local economies. This is a time to make much needed renovations, repairs and major maintenance to existing facilities,” said Rep. Daynette “Dee” Morikawa, House Majority Floor Leader. “Kaua‘i legislators work together to assure that we receive our fair share of capital improvements.”
HB 2725 HD1 SD1 funds Capital Improvement Projects including many “shovel ready” construction projects that can begin work quickly providing much needed jobs to help resuscitate our struggling economy due to the coronavirus.
Kaua‘i projects include renovations, repairs, and major maintenance to existing facilities, landscape improvements, new construction, land acquisition, and utility modifications.
Rep. Nadine K. Nakamura said one of the projects critical to the island is $1.3 million for Samuel Mahelona Hospital’s CT Scanner and $1.4 million for the expansion of the facility.
“I’m pleased that the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital Emergency Room will be expanded and that we’ve secured funds for a CT Scanner,” said Nakamura. “This means that all residents in our district will have access to CT scans without having to travel to Lihue.”
Rep. James Tokioka said residents frequently call his office with concerns about traffic and safety on our busy highways.
“That’s why I’m very pleased that $92 million has been appropriated to help alleviate the road congestion from Hanama‘ulu to Kapa‘a,” said Representative Tokioka. “I appreciate the support from Senate President Kouchi and Finance Chair Sylvia Luke for funding these important projects for our community. Other important CIP projects include $19.2 million to finalizing the long-awaited completion of the Kauai High School gymnasium, $2 million for the covered curbside pick-up and drop-off area for Wilcox Elementary School, and $150,000 for the Kaumuali‘i Elementary School’s new playground. These projects support our economy and give much needed improvements to our schools.”

• $600,000 for Kekaha Bridge improvements
• $2.5 million for Kapaa High School parking lot and drainage improvements

• $325,000 for Kilauea Elementary School outdoor play court repairs
• $300,000 for Waimea Canyon Middle School architectural barrier removal
• $1.5 million for Eleele Elementary School air conditioning
• $4.2 million for Kaua‘i High School girls’ locker room facilities
• $15 million for Kaua‘i High School gymnasium
• $150,000 for Kaumualii Elementary School playground equipment
• $2 million for Wilcox Elementary School covered pick-up and drop-off
• $8.7 million for Hawaii Health Systems Corp. renovations and expansion
• $1.4 million for Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital CT Scan room renovation

• $600,000 for Kaua‘i Baseyard improvements
• $92 million for Kuhio Highway improvements, Hanamaulu to Kapaa
• $501,000 for Kuhio Highway improvements at Kolo Road/Kalamania Road
• $500,000 for reconfiguration of Akukini Road and Kapule Highway
There is so much hatred for the mainland U.S.
The Federal money should stop.
