HONOLULU — Heidi Roach and Rayna Shafter, both students at Island School, are among the 20 finalists announced in the 2020 Kaha Ki‘i Congressional Art Competition by the office of U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
The announcement also launches a People’s Choice contest on Gabbard’s official Facebook page where the public can select their favorite pieces.
The entry with the most likes and loves in the People’s Choice contest on facebook.com/reptulsigabbard by 6 p.m. today will be featured as the cover photo at the top of Gabbard’s official Facebook page. The artist will also earn a cash prize.
Gabbard sponsors the spring event annually to recognize and encourage creativity across Hawai‘i as part of a nationwide high school art competition with other members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity every year to recognize the abilities of our budding artists and encourage them to pursue their talent further,” Gabbard said in the announcement.
“I commend the educators and family members who support these students as they embrace their passion. You will be impressed and inspired by their talent and creativity.”
The winners of the district-wide competition will be announced in June during a virtual ceremony.
The first-place piece will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol alongside winners from all of the other congressional districts. Second- and third-place awardees will be hung in Gabbard’s Washington, D.C., and Hawai‘i offices. All of the winners will be awarded cash prizes.
