LIHU‘E — Nearly 500 misdemeanor citations have been doled out relating to breaking state and county emergency rules set in place to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The Kaua‘i Police Department has issued 493 citations as of May 11 since March, according to a department spokesperson.
The majority of violations, 284 to be exact, stem from the islandwide 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew that was lifted last week.
The department has given out 190 tickets for sunbathing and other non-essential activities, and 19 for breaking the state mandated 14-day quarantine order for out-of-state and inter-island travelers as of Monday.
Five travelers have also been arrested related to violations of the 14-day quarantine order.
This does not include the two people who flew into Port Allen Airport in early May.
Following an investigation, Assistant Chief Mark Begley said this couple were following rules. “… The couple has a long-term rental on Kaua‘i and that they are abiding by the quarantine requirements,” Begley wrote in an email last week.
The Hawai‘i National Guard alerted the KPD of the aircraft’s unauthorized arrival at Port Allen Airport on Sunday, May 3. The National Guard provided officers with a description of the two travelers, their vehicle and aircraft.
Begley confirmed an on-going investigation into the general aviation company that flew the couple to Kaua‘i.
And as stay-at-home orders have turned into safer-at-home orders, that is unfortunately not true for some.
From March 1 to May 11, there have been 281 domestic-related calls to the department, 86 physical and 195 verbal, according to department statistics.
In the same stretch of time in 2019, KPD reported 254 of these calls. This represents a 9.6% uptick.
As of Monday, there have been 36 calls, 12 physical and 24 verbal in May.

These “rules” are actually color or law and all those enforcing them are they themselves guilty under Title 18 USC section 242 which carries a heavy punishment up to the death penalty. Meaning the mayor, governor, police are are guilty of breaking the “rules” including the constitution

I live next door to a mother who routinely beats the daylights out of her 17 year old son and 8 year old daughter. The stay at home order has worsened this situation, and the behavior continues, even though the police have previously responded to this address. The kids are emotional wrecks. Who the heck do I call?

This must be a joke? You mean “big brother” is fining or arresting people for sunbathing? Not staying in their rooms like good little children? Turning the wrong direction coming out of the airport? Our own snitch citizens are turning on themselves and calling the police to have people arrested for speaking Japanese and swimming in the ocean? I would suggest that all of this is unconstitutional and unwarranted! What kind of idiots are running our State and County to allow the confiscating of our hard earned freedoms in this way? This is not a disease that kills everyone who gets it!! If it were, we should support all quarantine activity, and quite frankly, if it were, everyone would disappear on their own! This is a rather nasty flu, but as of May 14th it has killed less than .059% of those who have experienced it, and most of the deaths were actually related to other already existing health issues like heart disease, diabetes, pulmonary diseases, advanced age, etc. I used to wonder how a Country like Germany could elect a Hitler who would go on, with the Country’s approval, to launch wars, kill millions, and confiscate all of everyone’s lives for a fear induced war mongering Political belief system. Well, I wonder no more.
Your facts are wrong. The death rate is far higher than that, and you should be ashamed for pushing false health information.
Also, you can be a carrier without showing symptoms – thereby spreading this disease much more than others in the past.
Total isolation policies prevent broad population immunity. We know from decades of medical science that the population develops immunity while acquiring antibodies.
If we’re ever going to get our lives back, and not be on indefinite timeline of “maybe there will be a highly effective vaccine” we actually need the virus to circulate among people who can safely get it, get over it, make antibodies which historically – before the advent of highly effective vaccines – is how pandemics ended.
Please tell us all who can safely have this disease without passing it to others who shouldn’t get it. If you can do that, please either run for office or gain employment at the CDC!

Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota basically says people of South Dakota have common sense and that’s why people want to live there. The people have the power which aligns with every right we have as citizens. In Hawaii Mayors and Governors should be held accountable and liable for egregious actions that have lead to suicide deaths, businesses failing and unnecessary lockdowns of innocent, healthy people.
