WAILUA – A blessing was held Friday for the OOpaekaa Bridge, between Puupilo Road and Pulana Street. Closed since January for pre-construction work, the bridge is slated to open in September. The closure period could be extended due to weather delays.
WAILUA – A blessing was held Friday for the ‘O‘Opaeka‘a Bridge, between Pu‘upilo Road and Pulana Street. Closed since January for pre-construction work, the bridge is slated to open in September. The closure period could be extended due to weather delays.
“Mahalo to Hawaiian Dredging Construction, Kai Hawai‘i, Bow Construction Management, the Department of Public Works, and to the community for your patience with this project,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “Today’s blessing is for the safety of the workers who will work on this historical bridge and strengthen it for the benefit of our community.”
The scope of this $5 million project include retaining and repairing existing visible trusses, retaining existing rock abutments, adding new abutments behind existing abutments, new concrete deck system, and installing steel crash tested railings inside trusses. The bridge will maintain its existing width. New striping will indicate shared roadway with bicycles.
The bridge has been closed since January 2020. Motorists are advised to continue with appropriate arrangements to accommodate the necessary road closures, use alternate routes, follow detour signs, drive with caution, and allow for extra time to get to destinations.
Anywhere else on the planet, this would be a huge corruption scandal. Here, a 5 million dollar 30 foot repair that takes 9 months, gets a blessing! I guess this will buy many giant pickup trucks with bright fog lights and nothing in the back, for many reggae blasting, texting teenage family members.
