“Soup’s on,” said Susan Pittman of the Clayworks at Kilohana.
The popular fundraiser for the Lihue Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies will be held on Feb. 2 — the same date as the National Football League Super Bowl football game — at the Clayworks at Kilohana from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
“Or, until the soup runs out,” said Pittman, who along with her two sisters, present the event where diners of the specially-made soup by Gaylord’s is enjoyed in a hand-made ceramic bowl that diners can take with them. “People are able to get the soup containers, without the soup for several days after Souper Bowl Sunday.”
On Feb. 2, diners are able to enjoy the soup and trimmings in the shaded garden workshop area, or they can take the soup and container to enjoy at the site of their own Super Bowl party.
New for this year, Pittman said she created a variation of the soup bowl that is smaller in diameter, and slightly taller — the perfect size for holding in two hands (as a hand warmer for these cooler mornings).
People wanting the full range of colors and styles are welcome to visit Clayworks to pay for, and reserve the bowls of their choice, picking up the bowl and soup on Souper Bowl Sunday.
“We don’t know what kind of soup chef will create until a few days before Feb. 2,” Pittman said. “But it’s always special, and tasty.”
Mary Brinker, taking her first class at Clayworks, was thrilled to learn the product of her first class at Clayworks fit for Souper Bowl Sunday, once she gets the bowls glazed.
“I want to talk to you more about the Mobile Munchies,” Brinker asked Pittman. “When do you meet?”
Mobile Munchies is a weekly food distribution program under the Lihue Lutheran Church where volunteers create more than 400 sandwiches a week that is the core of the Mobile Munchie bag of food.
The bags are distributed to locations from Waimea to Kapaa for distribution to school-aged children participating in various after-school programs.
“We also deliver to the Immaculate Conception Church where they serve meals on Saturday,” Pittman said. “We also do meal service once a month at the church. If you want to learn how to make PB and J sandwiches, just show up on Thursdays at the Lihue Lutheran Church.”
