HANAMAULU — Hula lessons, dancing and live music are taking over the Jasmine Ballroom at the Kauai Beach Resort every Monday evening for the next 10 weeks for a Hawaiian-heritage music festival, the 37th season of E Kanikapila Kakou.
Starting Monday, the nonprofit Garden Island Arts Council and Malie Foundation will bring in the new year with the theme “Hula, Mele and Mo‘olelo.” The event is a collection of high-energy performances, live music and hula lessons from kumu Nathan Kalama, Puna Kalama Dawson, Beverly Muraoka and Vanessa Punua.
Musicians Anuhea, Haunani, Jeremy, Maka, Edward and Kunane will provide live entertainment.
Each Monday evening through March 23, gatherings run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
A suggested donation of $10 to $15 goes back into funding the event for years to come.
E Kanikapila Kakou 2020 is funded in part by the Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment program, and is supported by the county Office of Economic Development, Kauai Beach Resort, the Garden Island Arts Council and EKK supporters.
