West Hawaii Today reported Sunday that about two dozen residents and business owners in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island met May 22 to discuss issues such as crime and trash in public areas.
Residents discussed increasing security and lighting in public places among the options for curbing problems.
Kona Councilwoman Rebecca Villegas told attendees she plans to connect residents, county officials and organizations on issues related to the homeless population.
An assistant to Mayor Harry Kim says an environmental assessment is expected next month for the Village 9 housing project.
Officials say the project could provide between 20 and 30 homeless emergency shelters and a permanent supportive housing component and affordable rental-housing component.
