Kudos to all our school peoples on showcasing the great achievements of our schools (OMG, where did the time go — it feels like we just started school, yesterday, and it’s already June?).
Waimea Canyon Middle School had a great Exhibition Day Thursday (the Kekaha School fifth-grade students were thrilled with the visit by Gov. David Ige at their graduation banquet at the Koloa Landing Resort — great work, Carrice Gardner!), where not only were outstanding works being shown, but Esther Estes coordinated (no wonder the Waimea Lighted Parade — it’s Dec. 21, this year — is so good!) the groundbreaking of its new covered playground, Ka Ha O Waimea mural was unveiled, and Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami missed a great homeless presentation by Maile Cox (she needs to get on the mayor’s meeting calendar for a one-on-one on the homelessness issue — it was super great!).
Alia Lazaro, Leolani Fernandez, Taelor Camelo and La‘akea Alaibilla created a reef-safe sunscreen (they said it worked when they tried it out on a field trip to Salt Pond Beach Park!), and the next step in innovative learning is to get a team together to market this (it even comes in different fragrances), and how about the marine debris art?
Kudos to all the award winners (not just at Eleele School, where Jana Miyazaki’s class was a pizza-party winner, and one of her students, Courtney Faria, was the top eWaste recycler in the county’s first contest!) at all the schools for their achievers!
