LIHUE — Kauai Hospice will be holding a three-day training course for community members who are interested in serving seriously ill individuals facing life-
threatening illnesse and their families.
he 20-hour course includes the history and philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer, effective listening skills, family dynamics, confidentiality, death awareness exercises, spiritual and cultural diversity, grieving and bereavement, universal precautions, and an understanding of palliative care services. Presenters will include Dr. Robert Weiner, Kauai Hospice medical director; a social worker; patient care coordinator’ and spiritual care and bereavement counselors.
Additional volunteer requirements include background checks and a valid driver’s license and liability insurance if the volunteer is driving to his or her assignments.
“Each hospice volunteer makes a real difference. Their caring spirit brings something unique and meaningful that contributes to ensuring the highest quality of life possible for patients and their families,” says Regush.
The training is free of charge and will be held over two weekends on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, and Saturday, March 16, at the Kauai Hospice Center for Compassion, 4457 Pahee Street, Lihue. Volunteer application forms are available at www.kauaihospice.org. Pre-training interviews are required, and participants must be able to attend all three training days.
