WAILUA — University of Hawaii’s men’s golf team shot 311 in the last round of the annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament Saturday at Wailua Golf Course.
Saturday’s 311 brought UH to a 47-over-par 911 (304-296-311), and the team placed 20th.
“We still get that we can score. We just got to figure out how to do it consistently,” said Hawaii men’s head coach Ronn Miyashiro. “I think another positive is that we just got more rounds under our belt. Everybody got more rounds under their belt to get ready for April.”
Hawaii senior and Kapaa High School alumnus Bryden Salvador shot a 79 on the par-72 course Saturday. He finished the tournament 15-over-par 231 (77-75-79) and was tied with two others in 99th place on the individual leaderboard.
“It couldn’t get anything going. I was scrambling all day. I was up and down,” Salvador said. “Pretty much, I didn’t set myself up for opportunities at getting birdies. I’d miss shots where I didn’t want it, and that’s where it cost me.”
Salvador added about what could have been his last round on his home course playing for UH: “We just flew in here, and we had three days of competition ahead of us. Now that it’s come to this, it’s like, ‘Where did the time go?’ After I completed by last hole, there was a sense of accomplishment, seeing that I came this far. The three days, I feel like I did my best. I don’t have any regrets.”
UH’s Cameron Kaneko and Nickolaus Nelson both finished 10-over-par 226 and were tied in 82nd place. Kaneko shot a 76 on Saturday, and Nelson shot a 71 on the last day.
Arizona State won the team championship, finishing 24-under-par 840 (282-276-282).
Defending champion Texas A&M finished second with 21-under-par 843 (281-283-279), and Duke was third with 19-under-par 845 (285-275-285).
Brigham Young University’s Peter Kuest won the Burns individual championship, finishing 10-under-par 206 (66-72-68). Texas A&M’s Walker Lee was second with 9-under-par 207 (67-72-68), and Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara was third with 8-under-par 208 (71-66-71).
Defending individual champion Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M finished 3-under-par 213 (72-68-73) and was tied with seven others in 22nd place.
Hawaii’s men’s team next competes in the Grand Canyon Invitational on March 15 in Phoenix, Ariz.
UH will host this year’s Big West Conference men’s golf championships at Wailua Golf Course on April 29-30.
“We got three weeks before we leave for Phoenix. We’ll take our time with trying to change a few things to see if we can improve and get better for that tournament,” Miyashiro said.
