LIHUE — Several small land parcels located within the boundaries of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s 700-acre estate on the North Shore will be sold at a public auction next month.
A Fifth Circuit judge in October ordered a public auction of the land parcels, an outcome sought by a quiet title lawsuit initiated by Carlos Andrade, a retired University of Hawaii professor who owns about a 25-percent stake in the lots, according to a recent article in The Guardian.
A notice in the Feb. 14 issue of The Garden Island announced a partition sale on March 22 for four “separate properties, all kuleanas within a larger parcel.”
County property tax records list Andrade as the owner and show they are located within the property purchased by Zuckerberg in 2014.
The four kuleana have been the subject of a controversial dispute that has pitted the world’s fifth-richest man against hundreds of descendants of Manuel Rapozo, a Portuguese emigrant to Kauai, who acquired the land in the 19th century.
“This has been quite painful for the extended family, but we intend to resist and not be ashamed if we lose,” said Wayne Rapozo, a London-based corporate lawyer who is a descendant of Manuel Rapozo’s brother and is helping to coordinate and finance the legal battle against Andrade’s quiet title suit.
In a statement made via email Monday, Rapozo continued, “We want to be seen as doing the right thing for us the extended family and for Kauai and Hawaii. In many ways we view our battle as a fight for all of Hawaii’s traditional extended families and for fair play and truth in land and application of the rule of law in Hawaii.”
Zuckerberg published an op-ed in TGI in January 2017, promising to drop the quiet title suits for the properties owned by companies he controls, and a spokesperson for Zuckerberg later said his client will not own “any interest in any of the kuleana involved in the quiet title action.”
Prospective bidders can view the property March 3, between 9 a.m. and noon by going to the Pilaa gate near the intersection of Koolau Road and Kuhio Highway in Kilauea.
According to the TGI commissioner’s sale notice, “each prospective bidder shall be accompanied and driven to the property to be viewed in a four-wheel drive vehicle.”
The auction will held March 22 at noon on the steps of the Fifth Circuit Court Building, 3970 Kaana Street, Lihue.
Something seems really fishy here. How much has Mark Zuckerberg agreed to pay Mr. Andrade for his 25% interest? My guess is that a proxie for Zuckerberg will bid up the price far beyond its true value. Zuckerberg gets complete privacy to his domain and Mr. Andrade reaps millions for his effort?
I really hope Mark Zuckerburg is happy, he won. He just stole land from Hawaiian hands. So sad, he has 700 aches and that wasn’t enough for him. And now he’s going to buy the land or make deals with Andrade to get it all. what lies and deceit from both of them. It’s really sad that people can come to Hawaii or anywhere and buy whom or what ever they want. The land belong to the ancestors of Rapozo not just Andrade all his decedents, Andrade didn’t buy it or worked on it. he deserved nothing instead he used and lied to people over the years to get what he wanted. shame. and you call yourself a Local. There’s a name for you and it’s called pure GREED, I’m sorry you just as greedy as all those that come to Hawaii and take away from the local people. Mark and Andrade I wouldn’t even feel proud. If I was you I would feel ashamed. Both your names will forever been known as the 2 men that was so greedy and stole and bought your way into land that was never yours in the beginning. I guess as they say Money buys you everything and in case it did, This is a sad lesson and I hope this doesn’t happen to another local family again. This needs to finally stop. Another rich person trying to come here and take more of our lands…do the higher prices these guys are willing to pay make it harder for locals to purchase property? I think so.

This is a really sad time for the Native Hawaiians, seeing some billionaire entitled frat boy claim land from innocent Natives whose history runs back 150+ years. Carlos Andrade you oughta be ashamed of yourself to call yourself a native Hawaiian professor! You are oblivious to your own Hawaiian history! However I will say your going to make history all right, for being the largest Hawaiian sell out of the 21st. Get ready for Karma if you don’t do the right thing (it’s not too late to do the right thing).
Best way to get back at Zuckerberg is to delete Facebook. Not just you, but the whole community should just delete it. It is nothing more than malware at this point. Data mining and destruction of democracy. Delete Facebook on your desktop. Delete Facebook Messenger. Delete mobile Facebook apps. Take it all down. He works for China + Russia. Pure dolt.
