PUHI — Desiree Malama Kittredge of Kekaha said she wasn’t going anywhere Tuesday outside the Kauai Community College Learning Resource Center.
But she couldn’t help stopping to experience the excitement of Transfer Day, and the free food.
“I’m enrolled in distance learning at the the University of Hawaii West Oahu,” she said. “My husband has a good-paying job, and my goal is to graduate before my son gets out of high school so we won’t have more than one bill for college.”
Transfer Day is presented by the University of Hawaii community college system at all of the Hawaii campuses across the state, and is intended for community-college students who are on track to graduate with an associate’s degree in May to apply to either the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, or the University of Hawaii West Oahu.
During Transfer Day, students could apply to a UH four-year college with no application fee, an idea aimed at making transfers to the campuses easier.
Kainani Kahaunaele of UH-Hilo has been teaching in the College of Hawaiian Language for about 20 years, and welcomed the opportunity to come home, catching up with friends on campus.
She was speaking with KCC student Samuel Gauna, who is focused on teaching.
“I’m in liberal arts right now,” Gauna said. “But it never hurts to check out the options before I graduate.”
Representatives from the different campuses were on hand to help students with the “auto-admission” application process.
KCC offered free refreshments that attracted a lot of students transitioning between classes, and other friendly, competitive games.
Transfer days will take place at other community college campuses through February.
