LIHUE — With no outs in the fourth inning, Lahainaluna’s Jay-Z Paleka-Wright stretched a single shot to left field into a double Thursday during the opening game of the Kauai High School preseason baseball tournament at Vidinha Stadium.
Anu McCabe followed with a triple to right field, driving Paleka-Wright across the plate for the first score of the afternoon.
Lahainaluna is one of the team’s participating in the tournament that started Thursday and will continue through Saturday.
Honokaa of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation is the other off-island team participating in the tournament, where each of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation teams have an opportunity to face the visiting squads.
Honokaa was scheduled to face Waimea High School under coach Chad Delanoza in the nightcap that started under the lights at 6 p.m.
The Kauai High School JV team was injected into the tournament after one of the three off-island teams could not make the tournament.
Action continues Friday with two games on tap. The first game will play at 3:30 p.m. at the Hanapepe Stadium. The nightcap will start at 6 at Vidinha Stadium.
The tournament concludes with two games on Saturday — 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. — at Vidinha Stadium.
The KIF baseball season is scheduled to start on March 9 when Kauai High School hosts Waimea in a doubleheader at Vidinha Stadium.
