Hanah is a single parent with two children, a 4-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, who is in need of hygiene supplies like diapers and clothing. Hanah will be unable to spend the holidays with her children and their fathers have not been present in their lives. She tries her best to help her children and provide for them. The children have suffered greatly and any toys or gifts for the holidays would lighten their spirits.

Dorothy has been homeless for most of her adult life and has been suffering from substance abuse. She lives on the streets and receives assistance from local homeless programs. Dorothy doesn’t like to sleep in shared spaces and the local shelters are dorm style. Dorothy could use a bus pass and some warm clothes for the upcoming cold weather.
The Garden Island shares stories daily through Christmas Eve about real people (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges and who would appreciate a little help through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
In the past two years, the fund has raised more than $50,000, and every dollar has gone toward bringing joy to those who otherwise would likely go without anything on Christmas.
This year, about 400 families applied for assistance.
Donations are used to purchase local gift certificates that are in turn distributed via social service agencies to families in December.
Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. For more information, call 822-4517.
