HONOLULU — Hawaii Republicans have selected Rep. Gene Ward to be their new leader in the state House of Representatives.
The lawmaker from Hawaii Kai will serve as House minority leader.
The party said in a statement Friday Rep. Lauren Matsumoto of Mililani and Waialua will serve as House minority floor leader.
Former Rep. Andria Tupola had served as minority leader but gave up her seat to run for governor. She lost that race to incumbent Gov. David Ige in Tuesday’s midterm election.
The Republicans currently hold five out of 51 seats in the state House, equal to their number before the election.
