HILO — Big Island officials are working on a public-private partnership to create a viewing platform for people to see the new fissure and lava from the Kilauea volcano eruption.
West Hawaii Today reports the Hawaii County administration outlined plans Tuesday to construct the platform and a short trail near Lava Tree State Monument.
Parts of the project must go through the permitting process or go out for competitive bids, pushing it back a few months.
Officials have asked for funding in the county’s disaster relief package to the state Legislature, but the project’s cost has not yet been determined.
County Research and Development Director Diane Ley says the project aims to be a “managed viewing site that is respectful of adjacent properties and residences, respectful of our environment.”
