LIHUE — Sarit Tacata, who graduated from Kauai High School in May, is excited for the new school year.
“I’ve been waiting for school to start,” Tacata said. “I’m going to start with my courses in liberal arts at the Kauai Community College that starts its fall semester Monday.”
Tacata was one of two scholarship recipients from the Kauai Filipino Women’s Club who stopped by the organization’s Terno Ball planning meeting at WB’s Bar and Grill in Lihue.
Kailee Bush, a graduate of Kapaa High School, was the other recipient. Each scholar earned awards of $1,500 from the KFWC.
Tacata will study English so she can travel overseas to teach English. She plans to start her studies at KCC, then transfer to the University of California-Irvine to complete her degree.
Bush will be heading to Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, to study environmental engineering.
Funds for the KFWC scholarships are derived from the club’s signature red-carpet event, the Terno Ball, which is scheduled to take place Sept. 15 at the Kauai Marriott Resort &Beach Club.
“The club wishes it could do more for the students,” said Barbara Green, KFWC president and participant in the Terno Ball. “Next year, hopefully, we’ll have more to share. Raising money for our island’s graduating seniors through the Terno Ball has been a mission of our club’s founding mothers.”
The Terno Ball will open with contest registration and pre-judging at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails available until the program starts at 6:30 p.m.
Andy Bumatai will guide the evening of excitement and fun, featuring the vocal stylings of Lester Paul Recirdo, who was seen on television’s “Wowowin!”
The Bailles De Jose will perform its unique Filipino dance presentations. The well-known terno and barong competitions and a live DJ for dancing will round out the evening.
“Our unique VIP tables — with two options available — are back by popular demand,” Green said. “These tables are great for businesses and families, or groups of friends. The Champagne VIP Table offers seating for 10 with two bottles of champagne, a full-page ad in the souvenir book, program recognition and prime, front-row seating. The Wine VIP Table includes seating for 10, two bottles of wine, ad space in the souvenir book and priority seating.”
Faye Tangonan is the event chair for the Terno Ball.
