A series of in-depth, issues-based forums focusing on the County Council candidates’ positions on key challenges facing Kauai begins tonight.
It’s billed as a “face-to-face opportunity to dive into Kauai’s issues.”
Fifteen candidates are expected to join Community Coalition Kauai and its local partners from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Koloa Neighborhood Center.
The theme of the meeting is “Meeting the basic infrastructure needs and rights of the residents of Kauai.”
The second forum is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 18 at Eleele School cafeteria. The theme for this forum is “Improving the quality of life in Hanapepe-Eleele.”
“At each of the forums, County Council candidates will take on a singular focus, sharing their positions and potential solutions,” according to a press release. “The forum structure will provide an opportunity for a more in-depth understanding of each candidates’ thinking on that forum’s particular theme, as well as an opportunity for forum participants to ask specific questions of the candidates on that issue.”
All forums will have two parts:
w Part one is a large-group setting in which each candidate will have two to three minutes to introduce themselves to the large audience and answer at least two of the “thematic” questions posed by the individual community where the forum is taking place. These questions will be provided to all candidates ahead of time to aid in their preparation.
w Part two will be smaller roundtable sessions in which each candidate will spend a designated time with the participants who will be dispersed among the tables, one candidate per table. Public participants in each round table session are free to pose any question to the candidate, pertaining to the “theme” of that particular forum.
A third forum is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 26 at Anaina Hou Community Park Pavilion in Kilauea. The theme is, “Access to affordable housing for residents.”
A fourth and final forum is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 31 at the Anahola Clubhouse. The theme is “Honoring the local and Hawaiian voice: Preserving our natural resources and rural way of life.”

Yea, I’m sure all those people suffering from lack of affordable housing in Kilauea will be sure to attend.
