HONOLULU — Hawaii officials say the number of firearms registered in the state decreased by nearly 24 percent last year.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports figures from the state attorney general’s office shows that registrations dropped to more than 40,600 in 2017 from 53,400 in 2016. Firearm registrations peaked in 2013 at more than 60,700.
According to the state data, 96 percent of registration applications were approved last year. Nearly 2 percent were denied due to the applicant being disqualified as the other 2 percent were rejected for applicants’ failure to return permits.
Office research chief Paul Perrone says that despite the sharp decrease last year, the number of registrations is still high compared with the more than 13,600 in 2000.
