LIHUE — At 105 years of age, Gabriel Cataluna of Koloa is one of the oldest living veterans in Hawaii.
“He’s gotta be the oldest living vet in Hawaii,” said Ed Kawamura, past commandant for the Kauai Veterans Council. “And look at him. He’s still strong.”
Cataluna and his family, including wife Leonora and children, including great-granddaughters Kyla Pongasi and Kiarie Takenaka-Akau, helped him blow out the candles Wednesday — and no, there weren’t 105 of them, although Tony Elliott of the Office of Veterans Services said that would have been a sight to see. The Kauai Veterans Council honored the veteran early for his 105th birthday, which will be April 11.
“He’s still sharp,” said Kathleen Murguia, one of Cataluna’s four children. “Look at him, he still recognizes people by name.”
Cataluna, nestled securely in his wheelchair, flashed smiles of recognition and greeting to the veterans who collected to offer the elder gentleman their well wishes.
Cataluna was born on April 11, 1913, in Koloa where he continues to live with his wife and two of the couple’s four children.
During World War II, Cataluna served with the 65th Engineers, 25th Division. He was stationed in the Pacific, including Guadalcanal and the Philippines.
Following his tour of duty, Cataluna returned to Kauai, going to work for the County of Kauai for 27 years before retiring as a journeyman in his trade. Prior to joining the Army, Cataluna worked on Maui for the Wailuku Sugar Mill.
“We congratulate and pay tribute to Gabriel ‘Gabe’ Cataluna on this special day,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. who, as part of his birthday greeting, proclaimed March 21 at Gabriel Cataluna Day. “We honor him for being the oldest living veteran and wish him continued health and happiness on this special day where he is surrounded by his ohana, friends and many veterans. What an unforgettable day!”
