LIHUE — Kauai High School freshman Coby Lawrence fell from the ranks of the undefeated Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation Wrestling Tournament No. 3 that unfolded at the Kauai High School gym, adjacent to the KIF qualifying swim meet taking place at the Raiders’ pool.
“As the season winds down, coaches train their wrestlers to reach their maximum potential, which sometimes mean moving up or down a weight class,” said Mac Pigott, the KIF wrestling tournament director. “Clear leaders were established in several divisions — Kapaa Warrior Braeden Jensen, a senior, is undefeated, 6-0, at both 152 and 160 pounds. Lawrence, now 5-1, dropped to Mason Stoll-Tolentino when he wrestled up at 120 pounds. Stoll-Tolentino has a perfect 4-0 record at both 113 and 120 pounds.”
Kauai High School hosted 42 bouts for 14 girls and 27 boys who weighed in for classes that ranged from girls 112 pounds to boys 285 pounds.
Waimea High School senior Corey Agena has a perfect 6-0 record following three KIF tournaments where he remains wrestling in the 132 and 138 pound classes. His sister, Ashlyn Agena, is 3-1 at the girls 112 class after being checked by Kauai High junior Shaelin Manibog, who had suffered three previous losses to Ashlyn.
“Kapaa’s Ini Marshall has the best record in the girls’ weight classes, 5-0 at 127 and 117 pounds,” Pigott said. “Anna Malia Santos is strong at 4-1 in the 127- and 117-pound class. The big boys, the 220-pound division, could be competitive because Waimea senior Cody Artaho is split with Kapaa junior Malachi Sacramento, each getting one win over the other with just two weeks remaining in the season.”
Saturday, KIF wrestling moves to the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea for a dual meet format starting at 10 a.m.
The KIF Wrestling Championship meet is on Feb. 3, also at the Clem Gomes Gym.
