Jeff Peterson will be the featured guest Monday at E Kanikapila Kakou, now in its 35th season.
Peterson has contributed to two Grammy Award-winning recording, has been honored with eight Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in Hawaii, and he’s played with many well-known artists in Hawaii and on the mainland.
Born on Maui, Peterson grew up on the slopes of Haleakala, where his father, a paniolo, or cowboy at Haleakala Ranch, introduced him to Hawaiian music.
Whether as a teacher — he taught guitar at the University of Hawaii and ran that program for several years — or as a composer or an entertainer appearing solo or with E Kanikapila Kakou — it means, literally, “let’s play a stringed instrument together,” celebrates the legacy of Hawaiian music by presenting guest artists each week who share the culture.
Audience members are invited to bring a guitar or ‘ukulele and learn a song they’ll later share with the audience.
EKK is a program of the nonprofit Garden Island Arts Council that brings arts to the people and people to the arts and is now in its 41st year. This year, the EKK program has 13 sessions, most of which are 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays.
Guest artists hold breakout groups and teach lessons in slack key guitar or ‘ukulele and sometimes hula. From 7 to 9 p.m., the guest artist takes to the stage and entertains and talks story.
A donation of $10 is suggested.
All EKK events take place at the Kauai Beach Resort.
