NEW YORK (AP) — A disgruntled former worker at a high-rise construction site killed a foreman and then himself on Thursday, police said.
Foreman Christopher Sayers was shot in the head on the 37th floor of the Manhattan building Thursday morning. Police said they searched the building and found the gunman on the fifth floor, also shot in the head. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Co-workers identified the dead gunman as Samuel Perry, who had been fired from the construction site on Tuesday.
Police Deputy Chief Christopher McCormack said Perry was known as “a bit of a hothead.”
Neighbors said Perry had been plotting his revenge since he was fired.
“He’s been telling me. I was trying to talk him out of it. He got fired two days ago. It pushed him to his limits,” Karinne Gale, who lives next door, told the New York Post.
Co-worker Dennis Greaves, who knew Sayers and Perry, told The New York Times that Sayers was a good foreman.
“He’s a quiet guy,” Greaves said. “He comes in the morning real early, drinks his coffee, smokes his cigarette. And then he went about his business. He never gives nobody a hard time. Never.”
The construction site is part of a $2.3 billion development called Waterline Square.
The project’s three buildings are expected to open next year and will include amenities such as restaurants and an indoor tennis court.
