LIHUE — “We need bodies,” said Carol Wood, franchise owner for Coconuts Fish Cafe. “We have our health inspection later this week, and we have openings for cooks, cashiers and runners before we can open.”
Coconuts was one of 66 vendors seeking to fill positions Wednesday when the Kauai Job Fair opened its doors at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
“They need at least 20 people,” said June Munoz of Ho‘ola Lahui who maintained a neighboring table.
One of the people seeking opportunities included a person who said the firm he’s working for is considering restructuring so he was just looking at his options, while others were casual in their job-seeking — just seeing what’s available.
The 16th annual job fair allowed job seekers to learn about job training resources, job search tips, how to prepare for an interview, and how to write a resume.
“I want to make sure we’re aware of what is available so we can work with our students.”said Lyn McNutt of the Kauai Community College.
McNutt was visiting with the Hawaii Health Systems Corp. which oversees operations at the West Kauai Medical Center, Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, and the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital which had four pages of job listings.
“Most of the people passing by already have jobs,” said a spokesperson from the HHSC Human Resources office. “But it never hurts to put it out there. You just never know.”
According to the registrars, about a hundred people seeking jobs passed through the doors during the first 90 minutes of opening.
The job fair was presented by the WorkWise Kauai-Consortium of Core Partners, the County of Kauai, and the Kauai Workforce Development Board.
