The Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964 to Sartre “for his work which, rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age.” However, Sartre, who was central to the rise of existential thought in the 20th century through such works as “Being and Nothingness,” declined the prize on the grounds that he had consistently refused all official honors. This year’s winner is set to be announced on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017. (AP Photo, File)
