WAIMEA — Waimea High School football player Travis Fernandez got one of two
wishes when he attended the Super Bowl in Atlanta last month.
The
17-year-old Fernandez, who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, attended
the St. Louis Rams vs. Tennessee Titans game thanks to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation and the Hawai’i Visitors and Convention Bureau.
Travis was
accompanied by his father Albert and his brother Tyson.
Travis, Albert and
Tyson went to Atlanta, courtesy of Delta Airlines. They stayed at the Westin
Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta.
Another Hawai’i boy, 9-year-old Jose
Munoz, also made the trip to the Super Bowl with his parents as part of the
Make-A-Wish Foundation and HCVB effort.
Another of Travis’ wishes was a
self-less one. He would like to see a rubberized track installed for the
benefit of Kaua’i’s track and field athletes.
It’s too early to tell if
that wish can be granted or not, but the Make-A-Wish Foundation has contacted
the State Legislature to see what can be done. The estimated cost is anywhere
from $300,000 to $1 million.
Fernandez, a senior at WHS, was unable to play
football this season, but he was there all the the way through the KIF
championship season and two state tournament playoff games to support and cheer
his Menehunes on.
