PO’IPU — A visitor from Roseville, Calif., was found dead in waters off a
Po’ipu beach near the Sheraton Kaua’i Friday afternoon.
According to
reports from the Kaua’i Police Department, John Tiltona, 56, was found by a
beachgoer floating face down about 4 to 5 feet from shore at about 12 p.m.
Tiltona was brought to shore by the beachgoer.
“He was pulseless,” said
Koloa Fire Capt. Bruce Akaji.
At least two doctors, firefighters and
paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive him at the beach.
The man was
found in calm waters under sunny skies, Akaji said.
The beach where the
body was found is located west of Po’ipu Beach Park, a county facility where
lifeguards are posted.
After the body was recovered, it was transported to
Wilcox Hospital by a Borthwick Mortuary vehicle, according to the police.
Earlier in the day, the man told his wife that he didn’t feel well, Akaji
said.
If an autopsy shows the man’s death was the result of drowning, it
would be the fourth drowning off Kaua’i’s shores this year.
Earlier this
week, 53-year-old Stanley Bucasas’ died at Queens Memorial Hospital. He had
been pulled unconscious from the water off Kekaha Beach on April 1 and died on
April 4.
Bucasas dove into the water and struck his head on the sandy
bottom along the shoreline.
