POIPU, KAUAI – Michael Castillo, Head Golf Professional at Kaua`i’s
award-winning Poipu Bay Golf Course has been named Hawai`i’s 1999 PGA Junior
Golf Leader of the Year.
Winning the award from PGA’s Aloha Section
(Hawai`i’s regional PGA organization) puts Castillo in the running for the
national PGA Junior Golf Leader of the Year Award, which will be announced in
December.
The annual award is designed to pay recognition to a PGA golf
professional who is a leader in junior golf, reflects the qualities and ideals
of those who work with youth, and provides opportunities and experiences for
juniors to learn and play golf.
Nominations for the award are submitted by
other PGA members based on a number of considerations including: the nominee’s
contributions in service to junior programs and PGA events, involvement in
promotion and development of junior golf at their facility and within the
larger community, overall image, service and leadership in the area of junior
golf, overall integrity as an individual, and acceptance by junior golfers as a
role model and a person of outstanding character.
Castillo has been Head
Golf Pro at Poipu Bay since 1993 and oversees all golf operations for the
course. He served on the Board of Directors of the Kauai Junior Golf
Association from 1996 to 1998 and was recently elected to serve as President of
the Aloha Section of PGA for the years 2000 and 2001.
Under Castillo’s
leadership, Poipu Bay Golf Course has been actively involved in PGA Junior Golf
activities and programs in recent years.
Kaua`i Junior Golfers provide
volunteer assistance at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf each year, hosted by Poipu
Bay since 1994.
Additionally, the course sponsors various other activities
throughout the year for young golfers, including scheduled golf clinics, a
ten-week lesson program each spring and an ongoing daily special: young people
age 17 and under can golf free at Poipu Bay every day from 4 p.m. to sunset
(walking the course).
Youths age 12 and under must be accompanied by an
adult, and adults who are accompanying young players during this time can play
also for only $5.
Poipu Bay Golf Course, located adjacent to the Hyatt
Regency Kauai Resort and Spa on Kaua`i’s south shore, features an 18-hole
championship course on 210 oceanfront acres.
