LIHU’E — Traffic through Lihu’e town was detoured for nearly 5 hours yesterday
due to road repaving on sections connecting Kaumuali’i and Kuhio
highways.

Tuesday morning, Niu
Construction work crews began repaving about 200 feet of roadway and finished
the work at 2:30 p.m., when the road was reopened between the two highways,
said Glenn Yamamoto, a spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation
Highways Division on Kaua’i.
During the work, traffic was detoured to
Ahukini Road, Hardy Street, parts of Hardy Street and Nawiliwili Road and other
side streets which led to Kaumuali’i Highway.
The work is part of a $13
million project by the state DOT to reconfigure the intersection of Kuhio and
Kaumuali’i Highway to accommodate increased traffic flow through
Lihu’e.
Work by Goodfellow Brothers, the general contractor, and its
subcontractors, began the work in April.
A majority of the work — paving
the roads, installation of signal lights and pavement markers and striping
— is anticipated to be completed by the end of June, Yamamoto said.
Landscaping also is planned for the project.
